The racial wealth gap in the United States has witnessed alarming growth in recent years, with BIPOC households now possessing less than 25% of the wealth held by their white counterparts. A substantial portion of this wealth gap can be attributed to disparities in housing. Owning a home remains a principal method for building and transferring wealth, constituting approximately 70% of an individual’s net worth. However, challenges such as housing discrimination, restrictive zoning laws, income disparities, and lending practices have created barriers to homeownership, particularly for BIPOC individuals and first-time homebuyers.
Real estate lawyers and practitioners have a unique opportunity to address this critical issue by creating new pathways to homeownership for increasingly diverse communities. We invite you to join this critical examination of how real estate law plays a pivotal role in the short-term provision of affordable housing to underserved communities and, in the long term, contributes to the wealth accumulation of Black individuals and families. This event is free for students, faculty, staff and the general public. There is a registration fee for attorneys seeking CLE credit.

Demystifying Judicial Clerkships
Thursday, November 21st, 2024
12:30 PM - 01:30 PM
Thomas J. Meskill Law Library
Presented by the Clerkship Committee and the Center for Career Development
About the Program: Members of the UConn Law Clerkship Committee as well as recent alumni will speak and answer questions about judicial clerkships and the application process in an informal setting. There will be a focus on action steps for law students seeking positions in the fall of 2026 (predominantly 2L day and 3L evening division students), including planning for letters of recommendation and selecting and finalizing writing samples. Students interested in clerkships in 2025 (3LD/4LE) and 2026 (2LD/3LE) are encouraged to attend.
*A note on the clerkship application timeline: while exact application deadlines vary, clerkship applications are generally due about one year in advance of the clerkship (late spring/early summer of 2LD/3LE year). However, there are additional clerkship opportunities with application deadlines in students’ 3LD/4LE year.
