Biography
Ángel R. Oquendo has lectured and published extensively in the United States and abroad. An authority worldwide on comparative law and international litigation, he has often served as an expert witness before U.S. and supranational tribunals and as counsel to law firms, corporations, and public-interest organizations. Currently in its third edition with Foundation Press, his textbook, Latin American Law, has been used in law schools throughout the country and overseas. Cambridge University Press will feature his forthcoming legal and philosophical book From Human Rights Principles to Politics in the Americas and Beyond (2020) in the series Globalization and Human Rights.
Professor Oquendo graduated with a JD from Yale University, where he was a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal, and from Harvard University, with an AB in economics and philosophy (magna cum laude), and an MA and Ph.D. in philosophy. He served as a law clerk to Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He has received many prizes and distinctions, including the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Legal Theory Studies most recently, the Fulbright-Hays Faculty Fellowship, the Brazilian Foundation for the Improvement of Higher Education International Visiting Professor and Scholar Grant, the German Academic Exchange Service Guest Faculty Fellowship, and the Chilean National Commission on Scientific and Technological Research International Researcher Grant.
Professor Oquendo has held visiting professorships at Berkeley Law School; the Georgetown Law Center; the Free University of Berlin; the Universities of Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Aix-en-Provence; and the Federal and State Universities of Rio de Janeiro. He has regularly participated in meetings of the Yale Latin American Seminar on Political and Constitutional Theory, the Harvard Institute for Global Law and Policy, LatCrit, Inc., the Law and Society Association, and other scholarly groups
