History And The Tulsa Race Massacre: What's Law Got To Do With It? 9:30am
Friday, October 22nd, 2021
09:30 AM - 03:15 PM
Law School OnlineThis symposium will explore the historical context of the Tulsa Race Massacre, the exclusion of the Black narrative in the development of the law, and law schools' obligation to end this exclusionary cycle. Until the centennial of the Massacre this year, many Americans had never heard of the event, the destruction it caused, or the absence of justice for the Greenwood community. The law has never acknowledged the injustices of the Massacre, much less constructed remedies for its impact on the people of Greenwood. To this day, our nation continues to disregard the history remembered and narrated by Black Americans and the violence that continues to threaten them without redress. This symposium will focus on three main ideas suggested by the devastation of the Greenwood community: lack of historical recognition, lack of legal protection, and lack of knowledge surrounding issues of race in legal education.
