Dan Klau was appointed a judge of the Connecticut Superior Court in 2018. He was previously in private practice, most recently with McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter LLP. His practice focused on appellate and First Amendment litigation, particularly media law. He also litigated a broad variety of complex disputes involving commercial and private parties in federal and state trial courts. As an appellate advocate, he represented clients in the U.S. Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeal for the First and Second Circuits, and the Connecticut Supreme and Appellate Courts. His media practice included representing newspapers and other publishing entities in defamation matters and cases seeking access to court proceedings and files. He was frequently quoted on First Amendment and privacy issues, and wrote numerous articles and columns on appellate practice and First Amendment issues.
