Thomas Cobb directs UConn Law’s Legal Practice program, the school’s first-year lawyering-skills sequence. His scholarly interests include judicial decision-making, law and rhetoric, statutory interpretation, and legal pedagogy.

Professor Cobb studied literature, rhetoric, and art history at Reed College and the University of Alabama before earning a master’s degree in liberal studies from Reed. He then received an IIE Fulbright grant to study and teach in France and pursued graduate study in comparative literature at the University of Chicago. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School, including a semester at ESADE Law School in Barcelona. After law school, he clerked for Justice Susan M. Leeson of the Oregon Supreme Court and served as an honors attorney in the Appellate Division of the Oregon Department of Justice.

Before joining the UConn faculty, Professor Cobb taught legal research and writing for sixteen years at the University of Washington School of Law and directed and taught in Mitchell Hamline School of Law’s innovative legal research and writing program for five years. He has also taught U.S. evidence law and the jury as a visiting professor at Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 in France.

Professor Cobb is a former co-editor of the Journal of Legal Education. He served for five years as an associate editor of Legal Communication & Rhetoric: JALWD and currently serves on the editorial board of Legal Writing: The Journal of the Legal Writing Institute.
