Ilya Shapiro is Director of Constitutional Studies at the Manhattan Institute. Previously he served as Executive Director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution, and was Vice President of the Cato Institute. Shapiro has testified many times before Congress and has filed more than 500 amicus curiae briefs in the Supreme Court.

At this event, Mr. Shapiro will explore the legal boundaries of presidential immunity in light of the recent Trump v. United States ruling.

The Connecticut Racial Profiling Prohibition Project seeks to improve public-police relations. We invite law students to an educational event on racial profiling and its impact on communities. This event will take place on November 6, 2024, at UConn School of Law in the Starr Reading Room. Lunch will be served.

Dean Tomiko Brown-Nagin, a distinguished historian of the American Civil Rights Movement and professor of Constitutional Law, will discuss her forthcoming memoir, The Inheritance. She began the memoir in the wake of her leadership of the Harvard and Legacy of Slavery Project, which detailed the detailed the university’s direct, financial, and intellectual ties to human bondage. This book further complicates conventional wisdom about Southern and American history by discussing slavery in the family. The book will offer a new take on Confederate history and a distinct perspective on the “social construction” of race.

Liability for harm not only incentivizes individuals to exercise optimal care and guarantees compensation to victims; it also serves the interest of potential injurers. The prospect of liability equips subjects with a “right to be sued,” which enables them to credibly signal their prudence in potentially harmful interactions, thus substantiating trust among counterparties. Liability for medical malpractice, for instance, bolsters the reliability of physicians exactly because they would be the ones suffering the cost of inadequate treatment. Oddly, however, individuals and businesses regularly waive their “right to be sued” by purchasing liability insurance. At its core, insurance is thus in tension with the informational power of liability. This talk examines when and how insurance might undermine credibility and attenuate policyholders’ reliability in the eyes of actors with whom they interact—business counterparties, employees, investors, audiences, regulators or patients.

Registration is now open for Pretrial Justice in Connecticut, a Connecticut Sentencing Commission Symposium to be held at the UConn School of Law on Thursday, November 21st between 8:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in Starr Hall.

Featured speakers will review current pretrial release and detention policies in the state, explore best practices from other jurisdictions, and discuss reforms that promote justice, reduce disparities, and enhance community safety. Professor Sandra Mayson of the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School will deliver the keynote speech.

Presented by the Clerkship Committee and the Center for Career Development

About the Program: Members of the UConn Law Clerkship Committee as well as recent alumni will speak and answer questions about judicial clerkships and the application process in an informal setting. There will be a focus on action steps for law students seeking positions in the fall of 2026 (predominantly 2L day and 3L evening division students), including planning for letters of recommendation and selecting and finalizing writing samples. Students interested in clerkships in 2025 (3LD/4LE) and 2026 (2LD/3LE) are encouraged to attend.

*A note on the clerkship application timeline: while exact application deadlines vary, clerkship applications are generally due about one year in advance of the clerkship (late spring/early summer of 2LD/3LE year). However, there are additional clerkship opportunities with application deadlines in students’ 3LD/4LE year.

The contractual relationships between an insurer and its policyholders contains enormous potential for insurers to support their policyholders to reduce environmentally harmful activities and take adaptation measures that make their property more resilient to climate risks. But there are important legal pitfalls here as well. This talk examines enabling approaches throughout the policy life cycle, including raising policyholder awareness of climate risk and climate change mitigation/adaptation measures, assessing policyholders’ climate-related risk profiles at the pre-contractual stage, price signalling, exercising influence through terms and conditions, and green claims and reinstatement.
