Judge Carl Schuman was born in New London, Connecticut in 1954. He received a B.A. from Harvard University in 1976 and a J.D. from Duke University School of Law in 1979. From 1980 to 1997, Judge Schuman served as an Assistant State’s Attorney, Assistant state Attorney General, and Assistant United States Attorney. He argued the case of Kelly v. Robinson in the Supreme Court of the United States in 1986.
Judge Schuman was nominated to become a judge of the superior court by Governor Rowland in December, 1997. He has served for over twenty-seven years and is currently a Judge Trial Referee in the criminal division of the Hartford Judicial District. His past assignments have included the G.A. criminal docket, the child protection session, civil and criminal jury trials, complex civil litigation, habeas corpus matters, and tax and administrative appeals.
Judge Schuman has authored over 600 written opinions. He is the editor of books on Connecticut criminal procedure and Connecticut constitutional law and has written numerous articles for legal publication. Judge Schuman is a member of the adjunct faculty at Quinnipiac University School of Law and the University of Connecticut School of Law.
Judge Schuman served for five years in the First Company, Governor’s Foot Guard, which is part of the armed forces of the State of Connecticut. He carried the torch in the 1984 Olympic Torch relay and has completed eleven marathons.
