The program includes a roundtable discussion with: AGENDA: 12:30 p.m. - Luncheon begins 12:45 p.m. - Moderated discussion 1:30 p.m. - Q&A RSVP by March 28! The New York Pro Bono Scholars Program, an initiative of the New York courts, is designed to prepare students for the practice of law and to provide much needed legal assistance to underserved populations. Offered in the spring semester, students participating in this program take the bar exam in February of their final semester and then complete 12 weeks of fieldwork with a qualifying organization, along with a course component, for 12 academic credits. If you are interested in learning more about this program for spring 2025, please join me on Wednesday, April 3rd for an overview session. Please note: students must apply to participate in this program and the application is due no later than May 31, 2024 for spring 2025. This overview session will take place in the UConn Law Library - Room #202 from 12:30 – 1:30PM. This annual event celebrates the work Connecticut Law Review students have done throughout the year, as well as exceptional alumni. We are thrilled to announce that this year’s Distinguished Alumni Honoree is Judge Thomas O. Farrish, United States Magistrate Judge for the District of Connecticut. Judge Farrish is a widely respected member of the Connecticut legal community. He is received his Bachelor of Arts from UConn in 1999 and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 2005. While in law school, he served as the editor-in-chief of the Connecticut Law Review. Judge Farrish has been a member of the American, Connecticut, Hartford County and Tolland County Bar Associations, as well as the Oliver Ellsworth Inn of Court. He served on the boards of trustees of the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center and the University of Connecticut Law School Foundation, among other positions serving the legal community. He was appointed a US Magistrate Judge for the District of Connecticut in 2020. Awards for this year’s Best Note and Best Comment authored by graduating students on the Connecticut Law Review will be handed out as well. Admission is free, but seating is limited. UConn Law People’s Parity Project: lawppp@uconn.edu The challenge of climate change is unlike anything our governments have faced before, and citizens are often left wondering – what power do I have to enact change? Our conference will explore the complex relationships between the law and those who seek to change it. Speakers will highlight the work of activists on the local, national, and global scales who are using and reshaping the law to ensure a habitable, more just planet for future generations. The Conference will feature an Activism Fair, where local climate organizers will share their work with conference attendees. 8:15 a.m. - Registration begins 8:50 a.m. - Welcome remarks 9:00 a.m. - Panel 1 – Advocacy, Direct Action & Education The first panel features scholars in education, children’s rights, and environmental justice. Our panelists will discuss how those who are most impacted by climate change and environmental harms are structurally the least empowered to enact change, and how the legal system should change to address that power imbalance. Speakers: Moderator: 10:15 a.m. - BREAK 10:30 a.m. - Panel 2 – Local Activism The second panel will focus on the local context, discussing a variety of approaches that activists and legal professionals are adopting on the ground throughout Connecticut, to advance policy changes in schools, on the streets, in the courts, in city halls, and in the legislature. Speakers: Moderator: 12:00 p.m. - LUNCH During the lunch hour, attendees are invited to visit the Activism Fair, featuring exhibits from local climate-based organizations. 12:45 p.m. - Keynote by David Wallace-Wells Keynote speaker David Wallace Wells, renowned climate journalist and author of The Uninhabitable Earth, will offer his perspective on the importance of climate organizing, and the dangers of criminalizing peaceful protest. 1:45 p.m. - BREAK 2:00 p.m. - Panel 3 – International Activism The third panel will unite Martin Flynn global law faculty from Ghana, Brazil, Germany, and France to discuss the possibilities inherent in a human rights-based approach to tackling climate change. They will also evaluate the tactics that climate activists have engaged in around the world. Speakers: Moderator: After the third panel, attendees can take action by interacting with local organizers and students at our Activism Fair, while enjoying ice cream from UConn’s Dairy Bar.
